This Heart-Pumping Program to Feature a 13-Foot-High Inflatable MEGA Heart, the Debut of “Anatomy Academy” and a Glimpse of a Real Heart and Lung
HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis is kicking off its 2019 Health Series: Systems Magnified on Saturday, Feb. 16, with “All Systems Pumped” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This heart-pumping program will provide a magnified view of the heart and lungs by enabling visitors to explore a 26-foot-long, 15-foot-wide and 13-foot-high inflatable MEGA Heart exhibit; be the first to see the museum’s newest, unique educator-led program called, “Anatomy Academy,” and get a glimpse of a REAL heart and lung.
Those in attendance will get an unmatched educational experience as the MEGA heart exhibit takes children and families inside the human heart to witness the complexity of its anatomy. Individuals enter through the right atrium – one of the two receiving chambers for blood going into the heart -and are educated on cardiovascular functions, diseases and treatments, before exiting through the aorta, which carries blood away from the heart. There will also be a live, 60-minute, interactive “Anatomy Academy” program through which students will learn about the anatomy and physiology of their heart and lungs, listen to their own heart rate and respirations, and discover fascinating facts about their bodies as they get up close and personal with a real pig heart and lungs. They will even get to see a REAL heart dissection.
“It is far easier to prevent disease than to treat it, so we use fun, engaging and interactive exhibits and programming to educate and inspire kids and families to make great choices so they can live longer, healthier lives,” said Shannon Woodcock, president and CEO of HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis. “The MEGA heart exhibit and Anatomy Academy program are incredible – you truly have to experience these to fully understand their impact. We encourage families to register early.”
The “All Systems Pumped” program will be offered in two sessions – 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from noon to 2:30 p.m. The event is best suited for children ages 7 to 13. Registration is $10 per child for this special event and includes admission to the museum, an anatomically correct Heart Patch and a smaller group showing of the Anatomy Academy program. HealthWorks! is offering discounted admission for accompanying adults at $5. Registration is required and can be completed online at https://www.hwstl.org/special-events/program-days/.

HealthWorks! Kids’ Museum St. Louis came into existence as a result of efforts to expand The Delta Dental Health Theatre to address broader, overall health issues after Delta Dental of Missouri became a major corporate sponsor in 2004. Those plans evolved and grew more ambitious over the next several years, ultimately leading to the closure of the original theatre on Laclede’s Landing in downtown St. Louis after 38 years so it could be housed in the new, dramatically expanded museum. The Delta Dental Health Theatre was originally organized as a program under the Foundation of the Greater St. Louis Dental Society in 1977. In 2002, it was incorporated as an independent 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization.
