As retailers and dining establishments in and around the Quincy Mall prepare for an influx of customers during the holiday shopping season, U.S. Cellular (NYSE: USM) is equipped to accommodate the spike in demand for wireless access. Since many area residents will be relying on their smartphones to stay connected to family and friends, search for savings, use mobile pay, post updates to social platforms and more, U.S. Cellular is bringing a Cell on Light Truck, or COLT, to the area in advance of Black Friday to increase wireless capacity.
“Cellular Networks historically see a dramatic increase in customer 4G data usage during the holiday shopping season in areas of town with a high concentration of shopping and dining establishments,” said Shaun Hassen, Senior Optimization Engineer at U.S. Cellular. “U.S. Cellular is preparing for this year’s increased data demand on our towers in the Quincy area by deploying a temporary cell site to increase our overall network capacity.”
This temporary site will be positioned on the Northeastern corner of the Quincy Mall parking lot in advance of Thanksgiving and remain in-service until after the first of the New Year. It will increase U.S. Cellular’s network capacity in and around the mall, as well as sections of Broadway Street adjacent to the mall in multiple directions.
Wireless carriers such as U.S. Cellular invest in COLT equipment so it can be deployed in a variety of circumstances beyond enhancing network capacity during the bustling holiday season. It is often deployed to establish instant communication for responders to natural disasters and emergency situations when landline communications are interrupted. A COLT can also be very helpful in providing the increased wireless capacity during major fairs and festivals that attract significant crowds.
